(Press release) CALL OF THE WILD | Jan 2012

– text by Identity Art Gallery HK

‘Identity Art Gallery is pleased to present Call of the Wild, the first Hong Kong solo exhibition by British painter Abigail Box. Featuring a fantastic explosion of colours and wildlife captured in diverse human wilderness, Box’ latest collection of collage-inspired paintings propel viewers to a world of ambiguity filled with strange and sometime unsettling scenarios.

Expressing her curiosity about the contradiction of existence via found imagery and an aesthetic manipulation of colour, space and composition, Box’ energetic large-scale canvasses and distinctive approach into figurative painting has won her numerous ‘one to watch’ praises in the up-and-coming London art scene.

Serious themes of belonging and identity displacement run throughout her ambiguous narratives, capturing an eerie sense of magical realism streaming through big expanse of light-hearted colours and minimalist grids, giving a strange echoing of silence, a timeless illusion of depths, while transforming space throughout.’
